The Problem We Solve

Sun Damage Ruins LCD Screens

Constant UV exposure and heat cause the polarizer film on your display to degrade, darken, and become unreadable. Replacing the entire unit can cost $1,000 to $5,000 or more. Our polarizer replacement service restores your screen for a fraction of the cost.

Darkened Screens

UV rays break down the polarizer film, causing your display to go dark or become nearly impossible to read, even at full brightness.

Yellowed & Stained

Heat and moisture cause discoloration, yellowing, and brown staining on the display surface, making charts and data unreadable.

Faded & Washed Out

Years of sun exposure wash out the contrast and colors on your screen, making it difficult to see in any lighting condition.

From your first contact to receiving your restored display, we've designed a straightforward process that keeps you informed at every stage. No guesswork, no surprises.

1

Request a Quote

Fill out the service request form on this page or contact us directly. Provide the brand, model number, screen size, and a brief description of the issue (darkened, stained, faded, etc.). Photos of the damage are helpful but not required.

What We Need From You

Brand & model number (e.g., Garmin GPSMAP 4212)
Screen size (approximate is fine)
Description of the problem
Photo of the display (optional but helpful)
Your shipping address
Phone number or email for updates
We respond within 24 hours with a firm, no-obligation quote
2

Once you approve the quote, we'll send you our shipping address and detailed packing instructions. No payment is required upfront — we invoice after we've inspected the unit and confirmed the repair scope.

Packing Instructions

1
Remove the display from the vessel

Disconnect all cables and wiring harnesses. Take a photo of the connections before disconnecting so you can reinstall easily later.

2
Wrap in anti-static material

Use an anti-static bag or wrap the unit in several layers of bubble wrap. The screen face should be protected with a soft cloth or foam sheet.

3
Use a sturdy box with padding

Place the wrapped unit in a box at least 2 inches larger on all sides. Fill all empty space with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or foam. The unit should not shift when the box is shaken.

4
Include your contact information

Place a note inside the box with your name, phone number, email, and the quote reference number we provided.

5
Ship with tracking & insurance

We recommend USPS Priority Mail, UPS Ground, or FedEx Ground. Always add tracking and insure for the replacement value of the unit.

Do NOT ship batteries or units with cracked glass
We accept shipments from all 50 states
3

Inspection & Expert Repair

When your unit arrives, we perform a thorough inspection and document the condition with "before" photos. We then proceed with the polarizer replacement using our proven process.

Inspection Phase

Photograph the unit's condition upon arrival
Power-on test to verify the LCD panel itself works
Check for additional damage (cracked glass, water intrusion, dead pixels)
Confirm the repair scope matches the original quote
Contact you if any additional issues are found

Repair Phase

Carefully disassemble the display housing
Remove the degraded polarizer film from the LCD panel
Clean the glass surface of all adhesive residue

The Science

Understanding LCD Degradation & Repair

Marine LCD displays face relentless UV radiation, infrared thermal loading, and salt-air moisture — a combination that degrades the polarizer film far faster than land-based electronics. Our technical infographic explains exactly what happens inside your display and how our restoration process reverses the damage.

UV Photodegradation

UV radiation (290–400nm) breaks covalent bonds in the polarizer's PVA layer, causing darkening and loss of contrast.

Infrared Thermal Loading

Strong IR radiation (750–1200nm) heats the display past its clearing point, causing liquid crystals to lose phase orientation.

Exploded Layer View

An LCD has 8+ layers from cover glass to backlight. The polarizer films on top and bottom are the most vulnerable to environmental damage.

4-Phase Restoration

Our process: de-bonding, polarizer removal, chemical de-gluing, and precision orientation & lamination of new film.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our LCD restoration service.

The polarizer film is a thin optical film on the front of your LCD that allows you to see the display. Over time, UV exposure and heat degrade this film, causing the screen to darken, yellow, or become unreadable. We carefully remove the old film and apply a new, premium UV-resistant polarizer, restoring your display to like-new visibility. The LCD itself and all internal electronics remain untouched.

We service all major marine electronics brands including Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, Lowrance, Humminbird, Furuno, Standard Horizon, and many more. We specialize in Naiad Marine Systems stabilizer controllers, Mercury Vessel View displays, Caterpillar engine monitors, Cummins vessel displays, and Detroit Diesel controllers. We also service ATV/UTV dash clusters (Honda, Polaris, Arctic Cat, Can-Am), PWC gauges (Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner), snowmobile displays, and industrial/heavy equipment monitors. If your device has an LCD screen with a damaged, aged, or sun-faded polarizer filter, contact us for confirmation.

Most repairs are completed within 2-3 weeks including shipping both ways. Expedited service is available upon request for an additional fee.

Yes, every repair comes with a 90-day warranty covering workmanship and materials. If the new polarizer film fails within the warranty period under normal use, we will redo the repair at no additional cost. Warranty claims are prioritized and we provide a pre-paid return shipping label.

We recommend wrapping your display in anti-static bubble wrap, placing it in a sturdy box with foam padding on all sides, and marking the package as FRAGILE. Remove any mounting brackets or external cables. Detailed packing instructions will be provided when you receive your quote.

Yes. Our polarizer replacement service does not affect the touchscreen digitizer. However, if your touchscreen was not functioning properly before the repair, the polarizer replacement will not fix that separate issue. We can discuss additional repair options if needed.

No. We provide a free initial assessment when we receive your unit. If we determine the device is not repairable or requires work beyond our scope, we will contact you before proceeding and return your unit at no charge.

No, you do not need to send the wiring harness. We only need the display unit itself. However, if your device has a removable power cable that's easy to include, it can help us perform a more thorough bench test.

If we determine that your display cannot be restored (for example, if the LCD panel itself is cracked or has internal failure beyond the polarizer), we will contact you immediately. Your unit will be returned at no charge. You only pay for a successful repair.

We accept all major credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle. Payment is not required upfront — we invoice you after inspecting your unit and confirming the repair scope. You approve the quote before we begin work.

Yes, we accept international shipments. The customer is responsible for inbound shipping costs and any customs/duties. Return international shipping is quoted separately based on destination. Contact us for a shipping estimate to your location.

All repairs are performed with the utmost care and precision. However, older devices can have pre-existing internal issues that may not be apparent until disassembly. On certain models where the LCD is bonded to the lens or digitizer, there is a slightly higher risk during separation. We will always inform you of any elevated risk before proceeding.

Yes! We offer a 10% multi-unit discount when you send 2 or more units together for repair. The discount is applied automatically to each unit. For example, sending 3 Medium displays would be $243 each instead of $270 — saving you $81 total. Simply select the number of units when submitting your service request.

Absolutely. Returning customers receive a 10% discount on their next order. Use the promo code RETURNING10 at checkout. This applies to all pricing tiers. Note: the multi-unit discount and returning customer discount do not stack — the maximum discount per order is 10%.

The most common symptom is a screen that appears dark, faded, yellowed, or has brown/rainbow staining — but the backlight is still on and the unit powers up normally. If you can see a faint image when you shine a flashlight on the screen, the polarizer is likely the issue. Send us a photo of your display and we can confirm whether polarizer replacement will fix it.

Repair Disclaimer

All repairs performed by Marine Display Pros are done to the best of our ability using professional-grade materials and techniques. LCD polarizer restoration involves working with delicate electronic components, and while every precaution is taken, Marine Display Pros is not responsible for pre-existing damage, hidden internal defects, or any device that fails due to age, wear, or conditions unrelated to the polarizer replacement. By approving the repair, the customer acknowledges and accepts these risks. Our 90-day warranty covers workmanship and materials provided during the restoration service.
